Introduction

Apparel Today Ltd, established in 2019, is a 100% export-oriented knit garments manufacturer located at Gohailbari, Machinepar, Shimulia, Ashulia, Savar, Dhaka-1345, Bangladesh. Spanning 110,000 sq ft and employing approximately 1,589 personnel, the factory has a production capacity of 6,000,000 knit products per month, significantly contributing to Bangladesh’s knit garments sector and foreign currency earnings.

Greentech Inspection Ltd conducted a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for Apparel Today Ltd to evaluate potential environmental impacts, occupational risks, and sustainability compliance.

Project Objective

The main objectives of this case study were to:

  • Assess environmental compliance of factory operations under Bangladesh’s Environmental Conservation Rules 2023 (Orange Category).
  • Identify air, water, noise, and solid waste impacts.
  • Recommend mitigation measures to ensure sustainable industrial practices.
  • Evaluate socio-economic benefits generated by the factory.

Location and Surroundings

Apparel Today Ltd is situated in a mixed-use industrial zone surrounded by:

  • North: Residential areas and free land.
  • South: Industrial facilities, residential areas, and schools.
  • East & West: Free land for potential expansion.

The proximity to residential and educational institutions emphasizes the importance of environmental and occupational safety management.

Resource Use and Utilities

  • Water: Groundwater supplied via deep tube wells for drinking and sanitation; daily average consumption ~8,600 liters.
  • Energy: National grid supply (~56,622 kWh monthly) with diesel-powered generators for backup; total energy cost ~23,167,522 TK/year.
  • Fuel: Diesel for generators; natural gas for boilers.
  • Wastewater Management: Sanitary liquid waste stored in septic tanks.

Environmental Impacts Identified

1. Air Pollution

  • Boilers, generators, and construction activities generate emissions and dust.
  • Particulate matter and effluent gases are the main contributors.
  • Mitigation: Scheduled maintenance of boilers and generators; installation of emission control devices.

2. Noise Pollution

  • Noise generated by boilers, generators, and vibrating machinery.
  • Mitigation: Insulated machinery rooms, soundproofing, and provision of PPE (ear plugs, mufflers).

3. Solid Waste

  • Includes kitchen/canteen waste, chemical containers, and broken machine parts.
  • Management: Segregation and sale to authorized local waste collectors.

4. Liquid Waste

  • Domestic and industrial wastewater managed through septic tanks.
  • Mitigation: Proper treatment and monitoring to prevent soil or groundwater contamination.

Occupational and Safety Assessment

Key occupational risks include:

  • Noise exposure leading to hearing loss and stress.
  • Chemical exposure from VOCs or cleaning agents.
  • Heat stress in high-temperature sections.

Control Measures:

  • PPE provision (masks, earplugs, gloves).
  • Ventilation systems and exhaust fans.
  • Periodic health checkups for employees.
  • Worker training and operational safety protocols.

Socio-Economic Benefits

  • Employment for 1,589 personnel, enhancing local livelihoods.
  • Contribution to foreign currency earnings.
  • Local community uplift through economic activities and infrastructure development.

Conclusion

The EIA conducted by Greentech Inspection Ltd concludes that Apparel Today Ltd operates as an environmentally responsible industrial unit. While minor environmental impacts exist, all risks are manageable with existing mitigation measures, including noise control, emission management, and waste segregation.
